Irina Trubetskova (NRESS PhD Student) proposal accepted for presentation at the Parliament of World Religions
to be held in Melbourne Australia, December 3-9, 2009. This global and unique formun is held once in five years. Her presentation at this world summit is a great opportunity to promote ecological awareness and a sustainable way of life. Based on Irini's doctoral research, she will present a paper entitled
"Global Ecological Crisis: A time for the Reunion of Science and Religion?"
Science and religion are two disciplines that are seeking to discover the truth and attempting to understand the construction of this world, even though they are focusing on different aspects of the same reality and use different ways to explore and interpret it. Their historical relationships have varied dramatically – from full harmony, respect, and mutual understanding to alienation, separation, divorce, and animosity. It is an undeniable reality that we are living through an impending global ecological crisis that threatens the future existence of our human civilization and culture. It is also a feature of our time that science and religion convene toward a common goal of preventing a global catastrophe. The predictions of former and present time thinkers about the reunion of science and religion happening in our time seem to be coming true. For example, the philosophy of Russian Cosmism expected the time to come when the whole humanity will be united by "the philosophy of common task." Indeed, is it not the main task and mission of both science and religion now to work hand-in-hand by promoting ecological awareness and cultivating sustainable way of life in order to ensure the switch to sustainable development and decent life for generations to come?
