Tourism Planning and Development B.S.
The mission of the Tourism Planning and Development Program is to provide students with a greater understanding of tourism and it's role in local, state, national and global, economic, social and cultural development; and to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to manage the human, physical, and financial resources of tourism regions in an environmentally responsible manner.
The curriculum utilizes an interdisciplinary approach to provide students with a strong liberal education that is supplemented by a broad professional understanding of tourism. The curriculum takes into account the dynamics of the physical, technological, social, cultural, economic and political aspects of tourism in relation to vital travel components and functions. Students study both the social and the life sciences in order to understand and manage the use and development of natural and cultural resources. The program emphasizes the application of science to tourism development and management. The program also emphasizes communication and business skills because of their fundamental importance to tourism facilities and resources.
The program, through required internships and independent study, allows students the opportunity to expand professional preparation far beyond classroom and textbook activities. Internships and independent study projects enable students to come in contact with potential employers and enter into the tourism profession under competent supervision and guidance. The cooperative efforts of faculty and students will also provide basic information and services to NH communities that will enable communities to better identify, develop, promote and manage their tourism resources.
